“Delivering major road upgrades whilst preserving heritage values”
Diversi were engaged to undertake the detailed design works for a proposed intersection upgrade at the intersection of Laughtondale Gully Road and Old Northern Road include a new channelized right hand turn (CHR).
Old Northern Road is a two-way rural road which provides connection between Berowra and Greater Sydney (to the south) and Wisemans Ferry (to the north). The road alignment has some historic significance as it was originally constructed convicts.
Several major site constraints were considered throughout the detailed design phase. Most notably, the existing geometry included a combination of 3 reverse horizontal radii and narrow lanes which are both well below the standard requirements set by Austroads. The existing crossfalls (7-10%) around the existing bends were also well above standard parameters, whilst the historical alignment meant that there was little scope to improve these elements given the close proximity of nearby property boundaries.
The design plans were therefore prepared in conjunction with RMS requirements and the final design provided a significant improvement to the safety of the area whilst delivering the design objectives.
Diversi also undertook the detailed design works for approximately 540 m of road widening/upgrade works along Laughtondale Gully Road to cater for additional truck loads to and from the quarry.
